What makes someone a great hypnotherapist?

Friday, September 7, 2007, 12:02 AM PST [General]

In my last blog, I detailed five things that make someone an effective hypnotherapist.
I made many valid points. In my zeal to brag about the excellent training I received from Cal Banyan at the Banyan Hypnosis Center, I did not give credit to the other great teachers, innovators, and founders of hypnotherapy. That was a mistake.

I had the opportunity to meet many of the other greats in hypnosis at the NGH convention. Their work and contributions are so meaningful to me.

I know we can all agree that my other points were quite valid. Hypnotherapist should be professional, well trained at doing quick inductions, and spend the appropriate time working with their clients. I know we can all agree that in addition to direct suggestion, age regression therapy, forgiveness therapy and parts therapy can be paramount in helping our clients solve their problems and shift the way they live for the better.

Respectful discussion and debate is beneficial to all of us. This website exists so we can all learn from each other.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Marc

Hi Marc, your zeal is understandable. Zeal = good! Zealotry, not so much... I understood what you were trying to say in the earlier post, but could see how it could rub people the wrong way. Your enthusiasm shows that you recognize and appreciate the oppty you have there!

As a 5-PATHer myself, I'm insanely jealous that you're getting supervised directly by one of the best. It must be like training with Chef Gordon Ramsey of "Hell's Kitchen" (with less cursing, maybe?), brutally honest and effective.

PS. Your "insider reports" where you share some of the lessons from the supervision have been extremely helpful to me personally. Please keep them up!

    Hi Marc,

I appreciate your enthusiasm and your kind words about me and 5-PATH; however, I think that we would all benefit if 5-PATHers keep in mind that since most of the members of this network are not 5-PATHers. So with that in mind I’d like to suggest that it would probably be a good idea to tone it down a bit. (I know you are excited and that is all right.)

There are many people out there who feel very good about the training that they have received and the approach that they use and when someone pushes their "way" as being “the best” or “the only way to do great hypnosis”, you are bound to appear to most others to have gone, at least a bit, "overboard."

I hope that you will continue to be enthused about what kind of hypnotherapy you are doing, and continue to say wonderful things about 5-PATH® just keep in mind that we don’t want to alienate others along the way.

    Here’s to your success,

    Hi Marc,

Your enthusiasm for Cal's training is apparent in your writing and how great that you've been well trained as not everyone is.

I would just like to mention some of the other excellent trainers and another organization that supports highly trained hypnotherapists. In 1989 I trained at Hypnotherapy Training Institute in Marin County, Calif with Randal Churchill and Marleen Mulder. Their school has been established for over 30 years and their program is superb. Our beloved Ormond McGill taught for them.

I have taken training twice with the legendary Gil Boyne. His work in phenomenal.

And being certified by the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners is meaningful because they have the highest educational standards in our profession. They require 300 hours of training as well as oral, written and practical testing to qualify as a certified clinical hypnotherapist.

I speak at numerous conferences and have seen first hand that the ACHE trained hypnotherapists are very well trained.

When we continue to take training from other trainers/schools we deepen our understanding of how to be truly effective with our clients. Each time that I have studied with someone new it has added another dimension to my work.

    With respect,
